Acer griseum  -  Paper Bark Maple  -  Masarnen Rhisgl Papur
Native Origin
Central China. Introduced into UK in 1901 and later to North America.
Key FactsCan be found at altitudes of 1500-2000m. It is a small to medium-sized deciduous tree reaching 6-9m high and 5-6m wide. The bark is smooth, shiny orange-red peeling in thin papery layers. Typically yellow flowers, the fruit being a paired two-winged seed (samara) about 1cm long and 3cm wide. Many species of maples are widely grown as ornamentals in temperate climates for its decorative bark and spectacular autumn foliage. The plant has gained the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
Fun FactsI am a small, slow-growing tree known for my distinctive cinnamon-colored bark that peels away in thin, papery layers, hence my common name.  I'm "trioecious," meaning I can have male, female, and hermaphrodite flowers - cool, huh?  I'm considered endangered in my native country China.
